THE HON DR ANNE ALY MP

Minister for Early Childhood Education

Minister for Youth

The Albanese Government is establishing a Youth Steering Committee to enable young Australians to help shape future Australian policies and programs.

Minister for Youth, Dr Anne Aly today opened applications for the Government’s Youth Steering Committee, with young Australians aged between 12 and 25 encouraged to apply.

“Establishing the Youth Steering Committee is an important step to ensure that young people in Australia have greater input in shaping government decisions,” Dr Aly said.

“The Committee will help to develop a new Youth Engagement Model and create meaningful opportunities for young Australians to work with the Government on the issues that matter to them.”

The Youth Steering Committee will include up to 15 young people from diverse backgrounds across Australia, with applicants not requiring any previous experience to apply.

The Committee members will work closely with Dr Aly, advocating for young people and working with government officials and Members of Parliament.

“To ensure the committee represents the diversity of young people in Australia, the application process actively encourages applications from a range of backgrounds and experiences including young people with a disability, young people with lived experience of mental ill-health and young people from lower socio-economic backgrounds,” said Dr Aly.

“The committee membership will prioritise gender diversity, including non-binary members, at least two First Nations young members and representation from regional, rural and remote locations across every state and territory.”

The Youth Steering Committee’s first meeting will take place in November in Canberra. The Committee is supported by the Australian Youth Affairs Coalition (AYAC).

Applications to join the Committee close on Wednesday 5 October. More information can be found at www.ayac.org.au.
