Media Release: Young Australians shaping Government decisions

06 July 2024

THE HON DR ANNE ALY MP

Minister for Early Childhood Education

Minister for Youth

The Albanese Government is continuing to ensure young people have an active role in decision making.

Minister for Youth Dr Anne Aly today announced the appointment of 15 young people to the Government’s Youth Steering Committee, to provide direct advice on government policies and programs that impact them.

“The members come from many different backgrounds and locations, bringing a diverse range of life experiences to the Committee,” Dr Aly said.

“I’m looking forward to meeting with the new and returning members of the Committee and hearing their views and ideas.

“Young people have a lot to offer and it’s important for governments to recognise this and to work with young people to build a better future for us all.”

The 15 young people appointed to the Committee include, seven new members selected from more than 900 applications, and eight existing Committee members returning for a further year following an expression of interest process.

Aged 13 to 25, members come from diverse backgrounds and bring a range of experiences to the Committee.

This includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, members from culturally or linguistically diverse backgrounds, experience of mental ill-health, members from regional or remote communities, members from LGBTQIA+ communities and members with disability.

The Committee members will provide advice across government, including working closely with Dr Aly on the implementation of Engage! A strategy to include young people in the decisions we make.

Informed by consultation with more than 4,600 young people from across Australia, Engage! sets out how the Government will ensure young people are empowered, valued, and included in the development of policies and programs that impact them.
