MEDIA RELEASE: STORIES IN THE AUSTRALIAN NEWSPAPER, WEDNESDAY, 29 MARCH 2017

STORIES IN THE AUSTRALIAN NEWSPAPER

Stories yesterday and today in The Australian newspaper are utterly false.

I have not moved to extend section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act to cover religion.

I have never proposed an anti-blasphemy law, and I never would.

Labor is unwavering in its support of section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act as it currently stands.  It’s important Australia has strong protections against racism – and I will never apologise for fighting to keep them.

Changes to section 18C will not create any jobs, it will not save penalty rates, and it will not provide the people of Cowan with the infrastructure upgrades and high-quality NBN we desperately need.

Those issues are my focus here in Canberra; not the Turnbull Government’s attempts to weaken protections against racist hate speech.
